"Matas Blancas, windsurfing paradise, hosts for the first time the European Freestyle Pro-Tour"

Yentel Caers won the competition that took place in Fuerteventura

Yentel Caers from Belgium won the first edition of the European Freestyle of Matas Blancas in Pájara (Fuerteventura), that took place from 27th until 30th June. The podium was completed with Cassani from Italy and Antoine Albert from New Caledonia. After the contests in France, Austria and Italy, the European contest arrived in Fuerteventura with the professional, junior and young promise categories. International personalities such as Van Broechoven, Bonaire, Fabrizzi or Sims participated in this first edition that took place in Matas Blancas. Amongst the juniors, the presence of the Greek young promises Neubauer and of the Dutch surfer Van Linden were particularly noticed.

Absolute favourite

Caers arrived in Fuerteventura as the absolute challenger for the champion title, with a freestyle that was very solid from the very first day, when he confirmed his leadership. He won the two finals and accomplished all the expectations by demonstrating a freestyle of international level. The Belgian windsurfer, who finished amongst the top 5 various times on the worldwide circuit, confirmed that this “gives him the confidence to keep up with the calendar and to keep improving in this modality”. After being proclaimed champion, he added that “it was a very tough championship with a high level and despite the fact that it was a European competition, there were many participants of worldwide level, which made it a tough competition of very high quality”. The podium in the professional category was completed with Passani, Albert, Fabrizzi and Frans. On the other hand, in the junior category, the Italian surfer Marconi Eugenio won the gold and Dumond Corto from New Caledonia won in the Young Promises' category. The best windsurfer from Fuerteventura was the young Ancor Sosa, who is only ten years old and finished at a well deserved fourth place in the Young Promises' category. The event was sponsored by the Canarian Government, Fuerteventura's Cabildo and Pájara's Ayuntamiento. The objective is to consolidate this competition in the European calendar of freestyle as one of the most important events of the circuit.

"I love coming here because there are always good wind conditions” and he added, “I hope to be able to come back next year”"

Fuerteventura, a windsurfing paradise

Matas Blancas was the chosen location for the first time for this European competition and it didn't go unnoticed by any of the contestants. For the winner, Caers, “Fuerteventura is a place that never disappoints, I love coming here because there are always good wind conditions” and he added, “I hope to be able to come back next year”. It is a windsurfing paradise because of its unique conditions when it comes to practising this sport. The proof is in all the windsurfers who come from all over the world to enjoy their passion. On the board, they can enjoy intense and constant winds, no gusts, as well as big and uniform waves. The peculiar geography of the Canarian archipelago means that there are many beaches where to practice this sport and this is why so many windsurfers travel to Fuerteventura to practice and prepare the world level windsurfing competitions.
