"The Cabildo presents the prizes of the National Tabefe Cheese Contest to cheese producers from the Canaries and Mainland Spain"
Fuerteventura's Cabildo presented the prizes of the 16th National Tabefe Cheese Contest, organised during the Agriculture, Livestock and Fishing Fair of Fuerteventura, FEAGA. The president of the Cabildo, Marcial Morales and the Agriculture, Livestock and Fishing councillor, Juan Estárico, presented the awards in July during an event that took place at the Mirador Hotel in Puerto del Rosario. The prizes were also presented by the Agriculture, Livestock and Fishing councillor of Lanzarote's Cabildo, Antonio Morales and the same councillor for Puerto del Rosario, Raimundo Vera.
Out of the 108 goat cheeses presented, that came from the islands and various autonomous communities, the fresh cheese Guatisea from the cheese farm Montaña Blanca of Lanzarote was selected as the best cheese of the Canaries. The owner, Alexis Hernández, was satisfied to see that his cheeses were rewarded during the contest “a gratifying fact as the competition was tough”. Two cheeses from Fuerteventura were rewarded during this edition. The cheese called Rosa de la Madera, of Julián Pérez Alonso and Rosa Acosta, of Tuineje, won the first prize in the modality of semi-cured cheese elaborated with raw milk. On the other hand, Quesos Tetir S.L. Won the second prize in the cured cheese with raw milk category. In the 2018 edition of the Tabefe Prizes, cheeses from all the Canary Islands competed apart from El Hierro, as well as from the communities of Andalusia, Extremadura, Castilla La Mancha, Murcia and La Rioja. 60% of the goat cheeses that competed were from the islands and the rest from Mainland Spain. Fifteen professional national tasters and experts were in charge of electing the winners of the contest which has become a reference in the country for goat cheese producers.
