FMHOY - Fuerteventura
The project to clean up barranco of Río Cabras is part of the sponsoring programme of LIBERA, an initiative from SEO/BirdLife in coordination with Ecoembes, that consists of 50 plans all over Spain that have benefited from a 1.500 Euro support to help with the development of those initiatives. In the Canary Islands, the Association of Volunteers of Help for Nature in Fuerteventura (Avanfuer) was chosen to receive the support to get rid of the waste in the area of the Barranco of Río Cabras.
This project was chosen amongst 97 that were presented nationally. In addition to the quality, other aspects were evaluated such as the duration of the action in non-urban spaces of high ecological value and where the activity developed works on the three main points of the project of LIBERA: knowledge, prevention and participation. Area of high ecological value Yanira Cáceres Arocha, president of Avanfuer, confirms that the area of Barranco del Río Cabras is «an area where water flows constantly in some sections and it is a resting place for many birds».
This NGO carried out actions in November, December and January and concentrated on cleaning as well as bird watching (like the African Blue Tit or the Dwarf bittern for example). Furthermore, they did not only take care of Barranco del Río Cabras but went further than that and extended their actions to the area of Rosa del Taro, in Tesjuate, part of Casillas del Ángel and until the mouth of Río Cabras in Playa Banca. As for the waste, Avanfuer took care of a list of black points in the area such as tips and even found an abandoned car in the riverbed.
The Ayuntamiento of Puerto del Rosario also collaborated in those campaigns. After all those actions, the next stage is the encounter called «Experiencias LIBERA» with the 50 sponsoring organisations in order to exchange knowledge and bring solutions to the problem of people dumping waste in natural environments. «With those sponsors, we wish to bring support to the work carried out by associations or entities that work onsite every day in order to preserve our natural environments.
The protection of the planet starts with the respect and action on the nearest environments», said Federico García, representing LIBERA. Regarding LIBERA The LIBERA project aims at contributing to putting an end to the serious problem of waste and residue in natural spaces. It was created by SEO/BirdLife in alliance with Ecoembes, the non-profit environmental organisation that promotes circular economy through the recycling of packagings. In order to do so, they suggest facing the problem on three levels: knowledge, prevention and participation.
Knowledge, because it is necessary to know more regarding the quantity, typology and origin of waste; prevention, through awareness and education campaigns; and participation because without the mobilisation of the population, it will be impossible to change the situation.
